Steven Kellogg was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on October 26, 1941.  He grew up with a love for drawing and as a child used to do an activity with his sisters called “telling stories on paper” where he would sit between them and draw pictures to go along with his whimsical tales.  He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design where he majored in illustration.  He spent many years working out of his Connecticut home, but he now lives in upstate New York.  He has illustrated over 100 books since his first book was published in 1967.  Being a devout animal lover, his famous Pinkerton series is based on his family dog.

A lot of his books are based on past folktales or songs.  The majority of his illustrations are ink and watercolor.  He often includes comical character dialogue throughout his books using various speech balloons.  Oftentimes, his illustrations are small and very detailed with lots of environmental signs for young readers to enjoy.
